It seems that all the big holidays happen around the same time, at least in the United States. Thanksgiving typically falls on the last week or two of November, and right after the holiday festivities start. New Year's Eve and Day quickly follow to round out the year, and it seems we have to wait forever for those magical to come back. Even the fall leading into the holiday season has a mental break in the form of Halloween. This is not a holiday in the traditional sense, but it is a celebration that sees varying levels of commitment from pretty much everyone at some point in October. The holidays at the backend of the year seem full of activity, a stark contrast to most of the year, especially that seemingly endless cycle of work or school in the first six months. It is monotonous, boring, and combined with some beautiful weather in April and May it can be downright torturous.
Perhaps that is part of the reason we put so much effort into the Fourth of July. It is our great country's birthday, but for many it represents a much needed day off, adding even more jubilation to the celebrations. Grilling hot dogs, lounging by the pool, and concerts all are defining characteristics of this holiday, but only one sets it apart from the rest. Christmas has its trees, Thanksgiving has its turkeys, but the Fourth of July has its fireworks. Exploding balls of light illuminate the sky as their explosions have children screaming and holding their ears. Brilliant displays of color leave smoke trails in the night, but the reflections of the dazzling show can be seen in the reflection of awe filled eyes of the spectators. The big ones are saved for the show, but throughout the evening little sparklers are handed out to cheering children whilst the pranksters in the gathering terrorize unsuspecting partiers with harmless bang snaps. All the while the smell of freshly grilled burgers and melting s'mores fill the senses, making mouths water and taste buds cry. The Fourth of July is our nation's birthday, but even more than that it is a time to enjoy the warm weather with loving friends and family and just relax.
